The Pastel Art of

Barry Jamison

"I've killed too many brushes...

...with oils or acrylics". Pastel is an absolutely pure medium…pure pigments and not dyes...quick start-to-finish if you want- no waiting for paint to dry. These are just a few of the reasons why I prefer creating my artworks in pastels. I have been working in pastel almost exclusively for the last 17 years, and after years of explorations of various other wet and dry mediums I have found that pastels are my medium of choice.

I have studied with nationally acclaimed artists such as Ben Konis, Albert Handell, Bob Gerbracht, and Foster Caddell, and was mentored for many years by Joan Jordan, an artist and teacher who lives in Lincoln, California. The guidance given from all of these mentors have brought the richness to my art that we see today.

My awards include Pastel Society of the West Coast scholarship award, Artist Magazine Top 200 award, Rembrandt-Talens award plus numerous awards from competitions in Redwood City, California. I was most recently voted "Peoples Choice, Favorite Local Artist of 2006" by readers of Folsom El Dorado Hills Magazine. I have a cadre of enthusiastic, repeat collectors throughout the United States, along with some of my work residing in collections in Canada and Europe.

I advise, "Enjoy the process, accentuate the love of the journey and solve the opportunities (rather than problems) that a new subject always has. When a student grasps the importance of careful observation and can faithfully reproduce these aspects in their work, then they can tackle any subject matter without fear and impart their own flair- style will emerge following this."

My Studio Gallery in Folsom, California is called Sutter Street Pastels. I have been teaching a focus class in pastels for over three years, with many continuing students enjoying the medium. I teach at all levels, and I emphasize that painting is simply an abstraction of the subject matter; created through careful observations and faithful attention to proportion, value and composition."The artist is ALWAYS the one in control of the artwork."

My studio is located at 815 ‘C’ Sutter Street, Folsom, California, in the Historic District of Folsom. I can be reached there during the daytime at (916) 608-8740.
