Welcome to the web site of Barry Jamison,

I am an award winning Pastellist. Formerly from the San Francisco Bay Area, I now live in the Sierra Foothill region of California east of Sacramento. My art studio and Gallery, Sutter Street Pastels is located in the historic district of Folsom, CA (near Lake Natoma) My original Pastel paintings and greeting cards are exhibited here. I offer classes for children (two are award winning: Sacramento County and California State Fair awards) and adults in my studio.

The classes are primarily in soft Pastel, the purest medium an artist can use. I love the richness of the medium, the fact it is made of pure pigment, the spontaneous nature of how it is applied, the ease of color layering and achieving the look I want through Optical Blending. Pastel was the choice of artists such as Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt and many many others.

About Oils

Okay, Okay- I am a pastellist, but heck- give a guy a break!! There comes a time when using the same medium CAN get repetitive so that's when I switch over to oil painting. I believe my early inspiration when I was a mere child of four was my neighbor, Joey. He was about twelve and used to paint and sculpt in his basement and I'd go watch. I think that's where it all started. The fragrances of the oil medium was so good; I haven't lost the liking of it to this day (though I try to use odorless thinners and such so as not to get my neighbors upset). So maybe that's where it started...yeah- I'm sure that was it.

“Appreciating the Art of Educating"

Empire Oaks Elementary School celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week with the theme, “Appreciating the Art of Educating". Over the course of five days student artwork decorated the gallery (the transformed teachers’ lounge). Students and teachers alike met artists face to face to experience artistic compositions created while they watched. Local artist Barry Jamison, owner of Sutter Street Pastels, demonstrated his artistic talent as children watched in admiration. More than 600 students and 30 teachers were spectators as the artist worked spontaneously. Small hands raised asked questions and the artist’s answers inspired the students.

The visit was a big hit!

From all of us at Empire Oaks Elementary School (Students, Staff, Teachers and the PTA), thank you Barry for helping make our week a success!
