Welcome to the website of Barry Jamison,

I am an award winning Pastellist. Formerly from the San Francisco Bay Area, I now live in the Sierra Foothill region of California east of Sacramento. My art studio and Gallery, Sutter Street Pastels is located in the historic district of Folsom, CA (near Lake Natoma) My original Pastel paintings and greeting cards are exhibited here. I offer classes for children (two are award winning: Sacramento County and California State Fair awards) and adults in my studio.

The classes are primarily in soft Pastel, the purest medium an artist can use. I love the richness of the medium, the fact it is made of pure pigment, the spontaneous nature of how it is applied, the ease of color layering and achieving the look I want through Optical Blending. Pastel was the choice of artists such as Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt and many many others.

Why use Pastels?

Modern Misconceptions about Pastels and Pastel paintings

Pastel Paintings are done in soft, muted tones.

  • No! Pastels are used by artists and enjoyed by art lovers for their pure and intense color ranges; they are considered the Most Pure medium one can use.

Pastel Paintings are not permanent

  • Yes They Are!! Consider that Edgar Degas' paintings are still as vibrant now as the day he painted them, as are Jean-Etienne Liotard's and Mary Cassat's, to name just a few. Consider the cave paintings in France that date back ten thousand years: they were done with pigmented clays, an early form of pastel.

Pastel Paintings are the same as chalk drawings

  • Wrong! Pastel is pure pigment to which a binding material has been added- it is not chalk. Chalk is precipitated limestone with color dyes added and is not intended for permanency- merely to annoy people while being used on a blackboard.
